Take action: URGENT: North Carolina Environmental Attack Gains Ground The North Carolina state legislature has advanced an attack on a 44-year-old environmental law—the state Environmental Policy Act (SEPA), which guarantees that when your tax dollars are being spent on a major project, all environmental impacts are evaluated and less-damaging alternatives are considered. HB 795—which has passed the North Carolina House and Senate—guts this critical law. The bill exempts most publicly funded projects from environmental review, even if tens of millions in tax dollars are being spent. Plainly stated, it puts our lands, waters, and wildlife at risk. Now, the bill goes back to the State House for them to concur the Senate's even more extreme version. This is our last chance to save this critical environmental law from attack. Take action today: Tell the North Carolina House NOT to approve the Senate's changes. Recipients Your State Representative or Representatives Message Please do not concur on HB 795 Dear [Decision Maker], * Personalize your message Now that the Senate has passed their version of HB 795 "SEPA Reform," I'm writing to ask you not to concur with their version of the bill. The state Environmental Policy Act (referred to as SEPA) protects my air and water, and my taxpayer dollars. HB 795 does not "reform" SEPA, it destroys it by essentially gutting the program, leaving only a false-front in place. There's no reason to implement such high thresholds for review, when the SEPA process doesn't stop projects and is not a threat to business or the economy. The Senate version takes these attacks even further, putting North Carolina's environment in even greater danger. North Carolinians want to know that our tax dollars are being used responsibly and that publicly-funded projects are not doing unnecessary harm to our clean air, clean water and public health. Our current SEPA law is a good law. Vote no on concurrence with the Senate version of HB 795, which would make our SEPA law meaningless.
