Texas has taken critical steps to address the natural gas pollution problem, putting your state ahead of many others. But about 13% of the gas mains operated by Atmos Energy Mid-Tex Division, the gas utility serving the Dallas area, are made from cast iron or other leak-prone materials. About half of those lines are also more than 50 years old.
Ratepayers bear the cost of gas released from these leaks. But this waste also poses a serious climate challenge, as methane, the main component of natural gas, is a potent greenhouse gas over 80 times more powerful than carbon dioxide over a 20-year timeframe.
Take Action: Ask the Railroad Commission of Texas and the Dallas City Council to build on the Lone Star State’s progress on natural gas pollution.
