When it comes to clean energy and climate action in the United States, California has long been paving the way, setting the pace for other states and keeping our whole country moving forward. But now, because of the President's proposed budget cuts to the Department of Energy—along with this Administration's dark view of the role of science in the fight against climate change—all of that could change.

Without the Department of Energy funding crucial research, we won't be able to bridge the gap and carry California's clean energy companies through the beginning stages of development—when it's riskier for private companies to invest.

I'm writing out of great concern for the proposed cuts to the Department of Energy in the Trump administration's proposed budget. These cuts, especially ones to important clean energy research and development programs including ARPA-E, ENERGY STAR ® and the Offices of Science and Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE), could hurt California's economy and our ability to reach our ambitious climate and clean energy goals.

The proposed cuts would halve the budget for the ARPA-E loan program, which commercializes cutting-edge technological innovations, slashes a program that has brought good jobs to California (funding 61 completed projects and currently funding 31 active projects in California alone).

There is a proposed $516 million cut to the DOE's EERE's for the remainder of 2017. This is a preview of deeper proposed action in 2018, where a $900 million slash to the Office of Science and a 50% reduction to OEERE is on the table. These cuts take direct aim at labs that are directly advancing efforts on climate science and innovation hubs for clean energy technologies and businesses.

California clean energy tech companies received 68% of total US clean tech investment in 2015, along with 90.5% of all clean transportation venture capital investment in the nation. 41% of all solar jobs are in California, with our entire energy efficiency industry employing over 300,000 people. We cannot allow the federal government to plunge this crucial industry into chaos.

Please protect California's economy and commitment to clean energy. Oppose these drastic cuts to the Department of Energy's crucial programs.
