Tell EPA: Don't Put Our Health At Risk For the very first time, researchers have looked at how dangerous pollution is affecting Americans’ health at a hyper-local level — and what they found will likely surprise you. Our work shows that traffic related air pollution on your street may be vastly different from the air quality down the street. These microscale differences in in air quality can have serious consequences for your family, such as heart attacks and death among the elderly. But political appointees at EPA are working on multiple fronts to destroy protections from traffic pollution. Take action today, and tell him to stop putting Americans at risk! Recipients Administrator Andrew Wheeler Message Please stop unraveling protections against traffic pollution Dear Acting Administrator Wheeler, * Personalize your message I'm writing today out of serious concern for Americans' health and safety, and to ask you to close the Glider Trucks Loophole and to stop all attacks on the Clean Car Standards. A new study in Environmental Health demonstrates that differences in traffic-related pollution at the street and block level have significant impacts on health among the elderly. Differences in air pollution between neighbors, people who lived on the same street, or within a few blocks of each other, are associated with higher risks of heart attacks and heart disease deaths among the elderly in Oakland, CA. Specifically, it found that -- among the elderly -- higher concentrations of Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and black carbon (BC) on the streets outside their homes were associated with a substantially increased rate of having a heart attack, heart surgery, and/or dying due to coronary heart disease. Trucks and cars are the main sources of these pollutants in West Oakland. Nearly one out of every 5 Americans live close to high-traffic roads, and your policies are putting them at risk. The Clean Car Standards were meant to cut carbon pollution, as well as the smog-forming emissions that spew from America's tailpipes and harms our health. Eliminating these standards is dangerous. And the Glider Trucks Loophole will put super-polluting trucks back on our roads, putting us at risk. Please stop all assaults on these crucial pollution protections. Our communities are counting on you to support the EPA's mission of protecting public health from this harmful pollution.
